What
payment options do you accept?
We
accept cash, certified check, credit card (American Express, Discover,
Master Card, and Visa), and money order. We expect payment up front,
or on projects over $600, 50% down and the balance upon completion.
- What
is your turn around time on projects?
Every
project is different, and the total turn around time depends on a variety
of things: You providing us with all the information we need to do our
end of the job, if your project has any special requirements such as
a secure server, a co-location situation, extensive graphics work and/or
data entry, number of changes done during the projects work phase, our
current work load, etc. On average, we estimate a 1 to 3 week turn around
time.
- Who
does your hosting?
We do our own hosting. Our servers are located in a State of the Art
Data Center in Michigan as we have found it to provide
excellent connections, support, service and security for our equipment.
We can also work with domains hosted by other companies, however, please
be aware that additional costs may occur. Other providers may or may
not give us as much freedom to work. Please contact us before choosing
a host, so as to possibly save yourself some grief and money.
- What
tools do you use for development?
We use a variety of tools, depending on the requirements of your project.
Some of those used in the past include FrontPage,
Dreamweaver, Hot Dog, Homesite, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop,
Lightwave, 3D Studio, Flash, Shockwave, Poser and Bryce.
- Will
you hire me?
Probably not. We are currently well staffed to meet our existing development
needs and are not currently in a hiring mode. When we do have an opening,
we will post it to our help-wanted area.
- Why
are your rates so high/low?
We have researched the rates charges across the world for the services
we provide and have aimed our pricing to appeal to the small to medium
business market. We also strive to be competitive in our local area,
and offer one of the highest service and quality to price ratios. Others
may charge more, but they are targeting the corporate market, or may
charge more but they may end up being someone trying to break in to
the field who hasn't fully researched it, or someone totally unqualified
to meet you needs. After all, You wouldn't pay $15,000 for a simple
1 page "Flyer" type site, and you don't want your companies
E-commerce site designed by your neighbors 15 yr. old with the free
editor built into his browser. Do you?
- Why
should I do business with you?
We use the latest tools, and bring to you an extensive experience base
and certified consultants to use towards developing whatever your company
needs. If you need graphics, we have graphics artists who can produce
quality work available to us. If you need hardware, we have aligned
ourselves with companies who can meet your hardware needs, be they service
or sales. We pride ourselves on being a 1 stop shop for the small to
medium business. Why go elsewhere? Check with our competition. Get their
rates, and turn around times. Then ask to see their credentials. Our
people are certified by Comptia, Microsoft and others. Compare. We believe
you will come work with us.
- Do
you host / design Frontpage sites?
Yes. We have people who are trained in the usage of Frontpage 2000/2002,
and all of our hosting accounts come with the option to enable Frontpage
access. Due to several security
issues with frontpage however, we do not recommend its use. Both
Adobe and Macromedia
make competing products with similar functionality that have been rated
high for both the novice and the expert. We recommend Macromedia
Dreamweaver. We do not support Frontpage use beyond basic troubleshooting.
Frontpage support is available direct from
Microsoft.
- I
want to set up a discussion area. Can you help me?
Yes. We can set up a full multi-topic online BBS-like discussion area
for clients who own their own domains. The costs are usually only a
few hundred dollars, depending on how much modification you require.
- What
is the path to "PERL", "SendMail", etc?
Path to PERL : /usr/bin/perl
Path to SendMail: /usr/sbin/sendmail
See your control panel for the most up-to-date information:
PERL Version : 5x
PHP Version: 5x
MYSQL Version: 5x
Apache Version: 5x
- Do
you support ASP?
No. SilverStar operates its servers in a UNIX environment. ASP was designed
to run primarily on Win32 platforms. We are aware that ports exist for
ASP to UNIX, however, these ports have security problems and pose too
great a risk to operate. There are services online that allow you to
convert your ASP scripts to PHP.
- Do
you support Cold Fusion
SilverStar does not support Cold Fusion. Cold Fusion works best on NT
or Win2k Server platforms whereas SilverStar is a UNIX-only Web host.
- Can
I run IRC related software?
No. Running of IRC software is a direct violation of our TOS and will
result in the suspension or termination of your account.
- Can
I have cron jobs?
Yes, SilverStar does allow you to add cron jobs for your master ftp
user. Inside your Control Panel you will find an option for "Cron
Jobs". You need to enter the jobs you would like to have run by
entering them there. Note: SilverStar does not currently provide technical
support on any aspects of cron setup or usage.
- Do
you support Access Database or MSSQL?
SilverStar does not support MS Access databases or MSSQL.
If you need database support,SilverStar does offer mySQL database capabilities.
Please see the mySQL portion of this FAQ for additional information.
- Do
you support MS FrontPage's Share Point component?
Share Point is an ASP driven add-on component for MS FrontPage. SilverStar
does not currently support ASP; therefore we do not support Share Point.
- Do
you offer PHP, MySQL, Perl, Ruby on Rails or SSIs?
Yes, we offer them all.

- What
is Virtual Hosting?
Virtual Hosting is where multiple web sites (www.anyname.com) are served
off the same physical server. This saves each customer from purchasing
their own expensive server, performing the setup and providing the appropriate
environment. This is the most common method of hosting sites of small
to medium size with light to moderate traffic.
- Do
you offer telnet or shell access? What is SSH?
No, we do not provide telnet access. We do offer a secure alternative
called SSH.
SSH is similar to telnet, but it's more secure. It uses high level encryption
and compression to make sure nobody can takeover or eavesdrop on your
telnet session.
